Our Quest to find an ideal material for real natural yoga matAfter we have spent a few years to find the material and the farmers, we have found the most adequate material, which was water hyacinth produced by farmers’ group in Satuek district of Buriram province in Northeast of Thailand.
Northeast of Thailand is called as “Esan” in Thai. In this region, the average household income is one third of the people in Bangkok, the mega capital city.
The basic material of our Zen Kodo mat is a mat produced by the farmers’ group. In this group, many women have been involved in the production and taken important roles to produce. They were respected as a precious household stakeholder to earn cash income.
We have interviewed with the leader of the group and investigate the way of the production as below.
1) Who makes?Siriwon group，the farmers’ group in Satuek district, have produced our material for our Zen Kodo Mat. 20 families are involved in the production of water hyacinth products. This group has kept Thai Industrial Standard for every 2 years. They have given 4 stars by standard of Regional Producers of Thai government. Their products are exported to the United States and EU.
Mrs. Ar-pra, a leader of the farmers’ group, shows the certificate of Thai Industrial Standard
2) How does water hyacinth grow?Water hyacinth is a wild natural grass growing in canal like below;
Why does picking up water hyacinth contribute to preserve the environment?This plant was imported from South America 100 years ago. Now, water hyacinth grows very much in Thailand, and people want to find a way to utilize this plant. Then, picking up water hyacinth does not destroy the environment, but contribute to the diversity of the environment. We can preserve our environment by adequate control of imported plants. We do not put any chemical fertilizer, pesticide or herbicide to water hyacinth in the canal. They are 100% natural.
3) How do we pick up water hyacinth?Farmers pick up water hyacinth on the boat;
This is a hard work, because fresh water hyacinth is heavy.
4) How do we produce the material?We use a long stem of water hyacinth to make mats.
After making length of stems uniform, the next step is to dry them in the sunshine.
After drying, we use sulfur dioxide for 1 day to sterilizing the material and to make the material softer. This sulfur dioxide is also used in the production of wine or dried fruits and vaporized perfectly after use in a few days.
The use of sulfur dioxide is so a little that there is no smell of sulfur in the mat. However, we are trying to develop different production process by not using sulfur dioxide.
The next step is to weave the mat by hands as below;
Summary of our survey:After the interview and investigation, we have concluded that this water hyacinth mat could be one of the most sustainable material for our yoga mat as the below reasons.
If you use Zen Kodo mat, you can contribute to the environmental cleanup, biodiversity and empowerment in rural part of Thailand as well as sharpen your meditative mind and body. We can achieve a win-win relationship between yoga practitioners and yoga mat with Zen Kodo mat.
In near future, we have been developing projects to produce Zen Kodo Mat also in other southeastern countries such as Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar, which are the least developed countries in the world.
