Fumie Mune

Fumie Mune as Herb Yoga Master

Fumie Mune has started teaching yoga in Bangkok since 2008. She has also been teaching in Japan after 3.11 Tsunami 2011, because She needed to empower Japanese people through yoga. Since then, she has taught in teacher training programs in English and Japanese both in Bangkok and Tokyo.

She has been teaching yoga from the view of women and their families as a Japanese woman who has a background of practical Zen, Buddhism, Shintoism, Teaism.

For very long time, it is usually limited to male monks who represent our cultural and spiritual background and convey to the western hemisphere and the rest of the world.

However, it is 21st century now, and there are 30 million people practice yoga and meditation which originally came from the orient. More than 80 percent of them are women.

So, She would like to share what I know and accomplish after long time struggling with her partner Kentaro in our lives such as how to use herbs when female sick or your child gets sick, how a woman can strengthen love partnership while being fully committed to your social and spiritual missions, and moreover how a woman can live more and more brightly everyday by practicing yoga and meditation.

She and her husband Kentaro integrated these teachings into a form of yoga named Herb Yoga. They have published 4 books in Japanese(soon will be in English) and 1 DVD in Japan. Herb Yoga has been practiced by more than ten thousand people. Now we have an association of Herb Yoga teachers in Japan.

They runs a Herb Yoga Teacher Training Program which include Food and Diet, Herbal Remedy(how to use Herbal ball compress), Posture method, Asana, Meditation, Relaxation, Meditative space creating etc. in Bangkok and Tokyo.

Artist Biography: Fumie Mune

Fumie Mune uses her deep understanding of Japanese zen art to integrate her perception of body, life and world into one structure.

She creates her artworks as tools to bring about revolution in the mass consumption society.

She also challenges the divide between art pieces and practical goods, because she points out the unspoken premise in Zen that all Zen art pieces such as zen garden, zen calligraphy, zen drawing have been made for practical use to deepen one’s meditation and spirituality.

Following the zen tradition, Mune’s zen art pieces are made to practical use so that one can absorb the essence of her art with 6 senses.

Raised by a mother who is a pious Buddhist as well as a master of Sado (=Cha, Japanese Tea ceremony) , Fumie Mune has been surrounded by embodiments of the very essence of teaching of traditional Japanese concept of body and space since her childhood.

Growing up with running around Satoyama mountains and rice fields of a small town in Japan, she has enjoyed observing transitory nature of atmosphere caused by changing seasons. The beauty of the nature urged her to create poets, drawings and tea huts from at young age. These habits naturally shaped her keen enough mind and body to later become the founder of Herb yoga which forms a stream in the world history of yoga.

At age 14, she decided Art as her lifework, and also determined to go over to US all by herself to deepen Art from the western point of view. She enrolled a boarding school, Wyoming Seminary in Pennsylvania and after three years, acquired her international baccalaureate.

She questioned herself as a Japanese, what message she really wanted to bring to the world?

She came back to Japan to observe the orient and Japan again and deepens her practice of Tea, Zen, meditation and yoga.

She met Kentaro later became her husband, who was a researcher in the field of environment and sustainable development in the world.

Fumie and Kentaro moved to Thailand along with their son for Kentaro’s research in developping countries.

During 6 years of living in Thailand, Fumie Mune proposed a lifestyle and methodology of Herb yoga based on the experience which they have overcame their son’s asthma by seeking varieties of world natural remedies.

As she has studied perspective of body and mind from a wide variety of oriental wisdom; Theravada Buddhism in Thailand, Yoga and Japanese cultures, she has reached to the point to realize that art and meditation could not be divided, but integrated as one.

Now Mune put her burning creativity into her Zen Kodo mats and installation art.

Fumie Mune as Founder of ChoCho and Herb Yoga

Fumie Mune, is a Zen artist as well as the founder of Herb yoga which is a stream of yoga practiced widely in Japan.

She is the leader of the Teachers Association of Herb Yoga International which is an organization to train teachers and trainers of Herb yoga. She is the author of 2 books and 1 DVD of Herb Yoga in Japan.

As she spreads the teaching of yoga, she noticed a fact that she contributes also to spread yoga mats to people. However, there are very few choices for yoga mats in the world today.

Statistics show that more than 30 million people practice yoga in the world. However, most of them use chemical yoga mats which are mass-produced with no doubt.

She decided to bring awareness to the world about Japanese tradition to make the best efforts to create space for one’s spirituality which harmonizes with the nature.

She realized her passion to make artistic, sustainable and empowering Yoga and meditation mats for new era. Finally she opened a gallery which is the world’s first gallery of yoga and meditation mat, Zen Kodo Mat gallery.

She aims that this gallery plays a role in the world today to grant more freedom in choosing yoga mats for the future of both the earth and humanity.

Her artworks are inspiring and full of teaching of oriental wisdom. This is because she has experienced and practiced real Japanese and oriental cultures such as Zen, Yoga, Meditation, Buddhism, Tea Ceremony, Japanese Natural Remedy and Aikido.

She creates her Zen art works according to her intuition and her practical knowledge about oriental cultures, which has been deepened through her entire life.

Original color and material

In addition to this, she prepares her own material and colors to draw figures by herself. She have tried to make her original color from natural herbs for several years. At last, she came to find the way of mixing several Thai herbs. This is because she is familiar to Thai herbs by learning “Samunphrai (Thai natural remedies).
